Mold on Drywall – Why it’s a Problem and How to Prevent It

Mold is a type of fungus that is often found around the home and which can cause a number of serious problems for your health, and the integrity of your property. Mold tends to grow wherever moisture collects, and especially in areas that are also dark and free from circulating air. However, what many people don’t realize about mold is that it also needs some form of organic material in order to thrive. Mold can “eat” materials such as wood in order to sustain itself, and this is also true for drywall. Drywall is a panel that is made from calcium sulfate dehydrate. It is found in many walls and ceilings and this is why mold will collect around your home so readily. Preventing this mold is important if you want to avoid expensive renovation, and especially in rooms like bathrooms. Here are some ways you can prevent mold on drywall.

Strategies for Preventing Mold on Drywall

Heating: The first and single most important thing to do is to keep your heating on. This is because moisture likes cold walls, so if you have no heating on it will settle there and create nice wet surfaces which will turn into mold and eventually homes for termites. You need to start turning your heating on as soon as the weather starts to get colder and to never let your home get cold in the first place – as it is much harder to heat it up when it's cold than it is to just keep it warm year round. This is especially important if you are away. Many people make the mistake of turning their heating off while on holiday, but this can cause the walls to reach what is known as “dew point temperature.” This makes them extremely difficult to heat back up, and creates an ideal spot for mold spores. Open Windows: The other really big way to make a difference is to open windows as this will help you to get air circulating, while meanwhile the difference in temperature will always dry out the moisture content in the air. Have your windows open first thing in the morning and during the day and whenever you notice the moisture build up. This is especially important in bathrooms and other rooms where you create a lot of vapor (such as the kitchen). Dehumidifier: A dehumidifier is a device that is designed specifically to extract moisture from the air and this is a great way to avoid needing exterminators. This will run continuously until the air has reached a certain moisture level and this will prevent the air and the property from becoming damp. Likewise extractor fans are very useful when placed into rooms that have a dampness problem such as the bathroom.

Using Mold Inspection and Remediation

The big thing to remember is that drywall is often hidden away behind paint, tiles, and other layers. This means that you can have a mold problem and not be aware of it. If you smell damp in your home, or if you notice heath complaints that point to mold, then you can hire a mold inspection company to provide testing. They will be able to help you check for mold without damaging your property, and to identify and destroy that mold if necessary.
