Mold Remediation Guide

Mold remediation services exist to help remove mold from residential and commercial properties. This process normally begins with mold testing and mold inspection, in order to identify whether there is in fact a mold issue. From there, the company can then go about removing mold and helping to restore air quality.

What Does Mold Remediation Involve?

Mold remediation begins with mold inspection and mold testing. Mold testing will typically involve the combination of testing kits that can be used to test for the presence of mold in the environment, and mold detection which can help to find the source of the mold. The first job of any mold remediation company will be to prevent any further damage. That means that any water leaks must be plugged etc. They can also suggest other changes to the property to provide lasting protection against sources of mold (perhaps a change of window glass for example).

The company will then use tools to remove water and kill mold. Wet vacuums and HEPA vacuums can handle the former, while dry ice blasting might be used in order to freeze mold particles so that it can then be more easily removed from the surface.

Mold remediation can also provide repair to help prevent further issues. This might include the restoration of furniture, carpet installation, etc.

How to Prevent Mold From Returning

After the mold remediation company has left, your work is done. There is still more you can do to reduce the presence of mold. Some useful steps to take include the following:

Remove Standing Water: Standing water is a very bad thing, and you need to remove this wherever possible. Standing hot water is even worse so be careful when boiling the kettle not to boil more than you need, and avoid running the hot water first when you run a bath. Standing water around the house is a big lure for scorpions and termites so avoid it by turning empty pots on their head.

Ensure Proper Draining: Make sure you drain all water away from your home as efficiently as possible. This means having guttering on the roof of your home, and it means using gradients to slope the garden away from your exterior walls.

Circulate Air: Opening your windows often, and making sure that the air can get around your property and to all the walls will help to dry them off and reduce mold. Note the problem areas are probably behind curtains or cupboards which create 'air pockets' where no fresh air circulates – just pulling them out slightly from the wall can help a great deal.

Use Bleach: All this will prevent more mold from building up, but it won't remove the mold that's already there. There are many mold products that can do this, but you will generally be just as successful using bleach on its own and scrubbing with the rough side of a sponge.

Just because the mold remediation company has helped to seal your home against future mold, that doesn’t mean it is impervious. Make sure to scrub regularly – the quicker you nip it in the bud, the less likely it is to develop into a bigger problem.
