Why Mold Affects Wood and How to Prevent It Eating Your Property

When mold sets into your property this is a serious issue. It might just be a slight patch of mold that has developed on your ceiling, but this mold is highly likely to spread over time and rarely does a patch of mold remain small without travelling at all. Mold spores travel in the air and move from surface to surface meaning that if you have a moldy ceiling you are likely to get mildew in your curtains and upholstery and you are liable to see the dark patches spread across your other surfaces too. Mold is particularly common for those with large amounts of wood in their property, and are also more common in parts of the home where lots of wood is present. For example, mold will often be found in the attic where there are wooden beams and rafters. Likewise, it is common under floorboards, and it can even affect wooden furniture! The reason for this, is that wood provides an organic material that mold can feed off of. This is also why mold is likely to affect books (the paper provides food), and even food. This then can cause your belongings and your property to rot and to fall apart, besides just looking unattractive in the first place. Floorboards can crack, furniture can become unusable, and you may be required to do a lot of renovation work. Furthermore, you will find that over time this can be very bad for your health and cause problems like eczema and asthma. If you already suffer from these conditions then mold will only exacerbate them, but if you don't have existing problems then it can even cause them. So what can you do to prevent mold from affecting the wood in your property? Here are some useful tips:

Reducing Moisture and Mold

Use More Heating: Mold spores like moist and damp areas and this means it's important to keep your home well heated. When your property gets cool this causes your walls and ceiling to drop below a certain temperature, and this in turn then means that water droplets in the air become more likely to condense and stick to those surfaces attracting the mold. Keep your heating up and you will keep your surfaces warmer and therefore drier and less covered in mold. Use a Dehumidifer: The other way you can prevent mold forming this way is of course to just reduce the moisture that's in the air in the first place – and one of the best ways to do this is with a dehumidifier that basically 'sucks' the water out of the air to fill up a tank. You'd be very surprised how quickly this fills up with a large amount of liquid. Avoid Moisture: You can also prevent the moisture from getting there in the first place by simply thinking about the things that cause moisture to get into your atmosphere. For instance if you should avoid letting any body of hot water stand for too long (by boiling less water in the kettle, or filling the bath with cold water before hot), and only dry clothes outside or in a tumble drier. If mold continues to be an issue in your home, then you might wish to consider swapping large amounts of wood for other materials. For example, wooden floors might be better replaced with tiles or stone. Finally, consider using a mold removal company. They will help you to completely remove mold, as well as to secure your home against future issues.
